Man, this is SO wrong… Jesus was (supposedly) crucified wearing just a big pair of briefs. These striped robes are totally inaccurate. Also, the smile on his face… it doesn’t really match the crucifixion scene I had in mind, especially if we do it according to what the Christian Mythology preaches (sorry, no pun intended here).

It may look like he’s actually enjoying the crucifixion… in a masochistic way, you know.

Anyway, how much for a kit like that?

        @Ivar:

Actually the Romans typically crucified people nude. Crucifixion was considered the most degrading and horrible form of execution — it was an exceptionally slow, painful, and humiliating way to die, reserved for slaves and the lowest classes of freedmen. The purpose was not only to kill the condemned but to demonstrate his (or her) low status and to dishonor their remains. Very often bodies were left on the cross to be eaten by birds.

Regarding the loincloth… as usual, Christians have no problem with public depictions of horrific violence and torture, but they blow a gasket over the idea of someone seeing a penis.

So let me get this straight … presumably, it’d be fine to crucify that doll onto the supplied piece of wood.

But what do you think the result would be if someone, just for the sake of an example, tried to do the same to a barbie/bratz doll? Or to put it another way, it’s alright to simulate a rather torturous ordeal (crucifixion) but it’s not alright (again, just for the sake of an example) to pretend you’re a sword wielding barbarian slaying evil monsters?

    • 2009 April 24

If someone crucified a Barbie and posted a pic on the internet, they would be called a “blasphemer” or accused of mockery.

I have read about brothers who became lovers. This can easily happen especially among gay identical twins. You can call this incest, if you want, but this kind of relationship has no ethical problems. Homosexual brothers, like other homosexual couples, do not produce offspring.

Employing the crucify Christ kit would be a really neat religious thing to do for those who are religiously inclined. Christ followers, of course, just smile at this silliness because they know that Jesus Christ died, yes, on a cross, just once for the salvation of mankind, including you and me. How would you know? The evidence and artifacts are mounting more and more each day that is his existence was real. Oh and John, Luke, Matthew and Peter pretty much wrote their version of the gospel with very little if any knowledge of each others.

You think there is no maker? Lets see if you finally come to senses before you pass on and meet him on the other side.

As far as the crucifix posted above. Do you know the pain and the agony that he suffered for you? Coming to understand this may give you some insight into your beliefs.

Here is hoping you come to your senses! Amen I say and God bless you.

        • 2009 April 25

And you don’t know that the crucifixion of Christ ever happened either.

If it did, he was a only a human. Jesus never once declared that he was THE ONE and ONLY son of God.

          • 2009 April 26

No Mark people just passed the story down generation to generation. I have attached a little something that might educate you about the fact that Jesus was God.
Oh and one more thing, yes he never declared himself to be the one and only son of god, just the son of god and the son of man.

Scripture clearly says that Jesus was and is God. Philippians 2:6-8 says that Jesus was “in very nature God…but made himself nothing,” and was “found in appearance as a man.” Jesus was in very nature God but took on the appearance of a man. Colossians 1:19 says that “God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him [Jesus].” John 1:1,14 says that “The Word [Jesus] was with God and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…” Jesus, who was and is God, became flesh and lived among us. It is hard to see how anything could be stated more clearly.

            • 2009 April 26

Those are not quotes from Christ himself. , are they?

Jesus, himself never claimed to be THE (only) son of God.

Colossians and Philippians were written by Paul, whom had never met Christ.

I continue to find it amazing that so many so called Christians make
comments like this without even knowing what they are talking about.

Here oh lazy one, I’ve done your research for you:
          http://www.mediahistory.umn.edu/archive/biblicalDates.html

Note that NONE of the books were written during the time that Jesus
was SUPPOSE to be alive. The nearest was some 50 years after his
          death.

As far as WHO wrote the books in the bible, try this site:
          http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Did_Jesus%27_Disciples_write_the_Bible

They knew each other, they were deciples, either one of the 12 closest or
(like Mark) one of the 72 outer circle.

Having said all that, you might also read some of the sites mentioned
          here:
          http://www.google.com/search?q=constantine+bible&btnG=Search&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=com.pclinuxos%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&sa=2

I am always confused when I am threatened with meeting God – why would I mind? Most atheists believe that when you die, consciousness ends and there is no after. How could meeting God be worse than that? If he really is wise and all-knowing, he would know better than to send someone to hell for eternity for sixty or seventy years of crimes. We have nothing to fear from God, if he really is as loving and forgiving as you say he is.

But if Joseph Smith wasn’t the real Prophet, why would so many people become convinced that Moroni gave him the true Message of God!!

Do you see any problems with this logic? Any at all?

I could also extend this metaphor to Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, and Taoism, but I think Mormonism is a good enough example to begin with.

          • 2009 April 30

As I am sure you are aware, the only true prophet is the Deli Lama.

The Deli Lama is a former advertising executive who made millions of dollars in his day job. He often meets with his disciples at Cantor’s Delicatessen on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles, in the heart of our most famous Jewish neighborhood, known as the Borscht Belt.

Unlike other prophets, the Deli Lama is not into making money from religion because he already made millions in the advertising business.

The Deli Lama has incredibly strong powers of telepathy. Many other prophets throughout the world receive passive revelations from him without knowing their source.

The Deli Lama is unique in being very modest. He doesn’t at all care when other prophets receive his revelations through telepathy without knowing that he is their source, just as long as they spread his teachings to others.

He is truly the greatest religious figure of all time!

            Harleigh Kyson Jr.

          • 2009 May 4

The Deli Lama, who I have written about elsewhere, is a perfect prophet. He needed no angels to give him plates in reformed proto-Tocharian or dictate holy writ to him.

He thought up all his teachings himself through introspection. And he doesn’t need television or radio ministries to spread his word. He simply uses his tremendous telepathic powers to transmit his teachings to other prophets, who are unaware of their true source.

He is truly the greatest religious figure in all of history, and he is completely unknown except to a very small group of disciples who, because of his modesty, have been sworn to eternal secrecy.

            Harleigh Kyson Jr.

          • 2009 May 9

Was Moroni given that name because he was a Moron?

            Harleigh Kyson Jr.

        • 2009 April 30

There’s also the matter of needing extraordinary evidence to support extraordinary claims.

Julius Caesar, all in all, was a relatively straight forward person. What he did was note worthy but certainly was not a miracle of any sort. Therefore the usual criteria for evidence holds nicely and that’s what we have.

On the other hand, we have a man who claims he’s an aspect of the one and only universal deity whose followers claim he broke the laws of physics on a semi regular basis and did magic acts. That requires extraordinary evidence which simply does not exist in any form.

        • 2009 October 3

Even atheist historians don’t deny the existence of Jesus, it’d be like saying the sky isn’t blue!

Understand that this JESUS you mock paid the price for YOUR sin. Understand that and ask for forgiveness.

      • 2009 May 23

Actually Jesus, if he existed, died because he was an alternative religious leader who was draining away converts from the established form of Judaism that existed when he was alive.

Religious competition is often deadly. It has led to a lot of warfare in times past, and it is continuing to do so now!

        Harleigh Kyson Jr.

    • 2009 April 26

Yes, this is mockery of Jesus. You are right about that. What you don’t seem to understand is that there is no evidence that Jesus was anything but a mythical amalgam of tales which predated him. We don’t believe he created anything (nor does the Christian bible for that matter). Asking forgiveness from someone we do not believe in would make us crazier than those who believe in gods, so I don’t think that will be an easy sell here.

      • 2009 May 19

As you no doubt know, a lot of the tales in the Bible antedate it. There are all sorts of earlier tales about religiuous leaders being born of virgins and being executed for their beliefs only to go to some sort of paradise after they died.

So, you’re saying that Jesus was a sacrifice. However, you should know that, of all things abhorrent to the Hebrew god, right near the top of the list is human sacrifice. Why would a god that hates this practice engage in it himself? There is no sense to this idea, and that is one reason why Jews rightly reject it. Christianity is not derived from Judaism. It is a conglomeration of polytheistic myths put together with a mythical Jewish character in the center. It is no accident that the first proponents of Christianity were the Greeks that lived in the region. Many old religions had similar stories of dying and rising gods, Osiris, Dionysus, and Mithras are just a few.
Oh, and people should not use “Xian” for “Christian.” The Xians were a Chinese dynasty

    • 2009 April 27

      What total punishment?
He basically had a day of pretty bad pain and then had a three day nap. After that he went back to eternal paradise. Part of it isn’t nice, the rest sounds fine by me.

Of course, then you get into the whole silliness of god having sacrificing himself to himself for a concept he himself created and allowed to exist. And said sacrifice actually did nothing.

Or, I’ll ask you this, did your god sacrifice himself to himself to satisfy the demands that he created?

Does anything about this story actually make sense?

To begin, I hope this is a forum to have respectful discussion and not rude bantering.

I think we give too much credit to humanity. After all, we’re the most intelligent creatures on Earth. That gives us lots of room to think we’re the best, and ultimately, to think we have no need for anyone or anything greater than ourselves. From my understanding (and in a nutshell), this is the supreme reason for not believing in God.

Why are we this way? Of ALL the species of life on Earth, why do we happen to be so much smarter than everyone else. If natural selection and evolution were true, wouldn’t it be probable that something would come closer to our intelligence level than a monkey or pig? Those are just my personal thoughts.

If you could imagine someone picking up your slack in the workplace (but multiplied by infinity,) don’t you think you would owe that person an apology? In the same way, the whole reason God sent Jesus is to pick up humanity’s slack and make us right before God. There are so many questions to go along with this. I’ll do my best if you want to go on.

As far as Old Testament goes, Abraham and the others had to make animal sacrifices to pay for their sin. According to the Bible, it was the best of their flock. But to answer your question, yes. They were.

Problem with this view is that of all the things abhorrent to the Hebrew god, right up near the top of the list is human sacrifice. So, if this god finds human sacrifice so repellent, why is he reputed to have engaged in it? It makes absolutely no sense.
Christianity is based more firmly in polytheistic mythology than in Judaism. Many old religions have stories of killed-and-risen gods – Osiris, Mithras, Dionysus, to name just three.
Oh, and, by the way, I don’t use the term “Xian” to refer to Christians because “Xian” is the name of a Chinese dynasty…

      • 2009 May 19

If you meant to say “Brother Server of the light” the Latin would be “Frater seritor lucis.” If you meant to say “Brother of the server of the light,” then it would be “Frater servitoris lucis.”

If you would prefer to say bullshit slinger, then it would be “funditor merdae taurorum”.

If you want to say “All Christians are all bullshit slingers,” then the Latin would be “Christiani omnes funditores merdae taurorum sunt.”

Most people find this prospect horrifying. That is the principal reason why they develop mythological systems involving some form of living after death.

The Christian myths, with Judgment Day and the possibility of going to hell, of course, are utter bullshit just like other myths involving survival after death, but the Christian myth of a god that can send you to hell for, say, masturbating and not repenting before you die is perhaps the ultimate in perversity.

In their colonial expansion throughout the Mediterranean, the Romans were very tolerant of local religions and local customs, just as long as they did not interfere with their imperial authority. They knew they could not prevail among the people they conquered if they went for totalitarian control.

Pontius Pilate saw now threat to Roman rule in Jesus’ claims to have a kingdom that was not in this world. He made a pragmatic decision to let him be executed because most of the jews around him wanted him dead because he was effectively competing against their traditional religion by attracting too many followers.

I don’t believe that this is what the Deli Lama taught. (You can see my brief biographical statement about him earlier in this series of posts.)

    Mark, I knew it:
    A real atheist speaks German.

    • 2009 May 9

Hi. So first I want to say I’m not here to convert or change minds. But Im a christian.. and I think this is kinda dumb ^^ you know the “kit” thing. I just think it is kinda offensive. Because you know jesus really did die for you and loves you and I don’t think people would really take christ’s death seriously if it was just some kind of toy they could play with. And another thing i wanted to touch on was the comment that said god predetermined sin, and he forces us to do it. It wasn’t predetermined, because god had the Garden Of Eden where there was no sin, and we were living there with him. But the fact is He gave us FREE WILL, no the forcing of sin. And he gives you the free will to be an athiest, and that just shows he doesn’t force you do to anything, he just wants to love you and give you everything he can. But he never wants to force you to love or sin. He just wants a relationship with you, the rules don’t matter, religion doesn’t matter, the only thing that matters to him is the love you have for him and the relationship. And trust me I have not lived a “clean” life. And I have never been blameless and sheltered. So i personally know the love and forgiveness of Christ. And I know you want to too. And he loves you, and he wants to be with you, so i hope you know that. And he’s waiting for you, that’s the reason Jesus isn’t coming back yet is because he wants people all over to come to him. Because no matter what people say he DOES NOT want you to go to hell, again HE LOVES YOU sooo much. And I hope someday you know that in your heart, and i hope that maybe i’ll see you in heaven. :) god loves you, and so do his people. Yes some christians are crazy, mean, and condemning, but I’m not. I believe in ” You don’t take a bath before you take a bath” You don’t have to come to him perfect and good but you just have to go he takes you as you are.

i hope you know the love of christ in your heart.

    with much love nikkole :)

I agree, this toy is a little offensive, but not because of the whole religious thing. It’s because I don’t like the idea of little kids crucifying people as a game.

As far as Jesus loving us, it’s a nice idea, but it’s just a fairy tale. Belief in it is about as realistic as belief in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, or Yahweh.

Karen, I think that this is a children’s toy for adults.

Adam and Eve messed up by eating the fruit of the tree of knowledge, THEN they knew good from evil. What sort of father would punish the kids before they knew the rules?

X used for Christ is very old.

Abbreviations used as Christian symbols have a long history in the church. The letters of the word “Christ” in Greek, the language in which the New Testament was written, or various titles for Jesus early became symbols of Christ and Christianity. For example, the first two letters of the word Christ (cristoV, or as it would be written in older manuscripts, CRISTOS) are the Greek letters chi (c or C) and rho (r or R). These letters were used in the early church to create the chi-rho monogram (see Christian Symbols: Christmas Ornaments), a symbol that by the fourth century became part of the official battle standard of the emperor Constantine.

Isn’t it funny that as soon as people see a crucifixion scene they automatically assume that it’s Jesus. I mean come on, the Romans crucified lots of people!

Every time I see a believer with a crucifix around their neck I just assume that Brian’s nailed to the cross.

It’s kind of strange that a roman torture instrument became a religious symbol.
I’m not well informed about ancient Christians, but I do imagine that the cross became the main symbol when the (Roman) Catholic Church was founded.
Please correct me, if I’m wrong.

I often wonder what would have happened if the manner of death had been different. Just for some quick examples:

        Boiled to death in oil?
        Use of an iron maiden?
        Being pulled apart by horses?
        Burned alive?
        Gladiator combat?
        Beheading?

What sort of symbols would they wear then? Would they revere fire? Would they be forbidden to use oil in cooking?

        • 2009 May 9

Hmm, the iron maiden could be easily made into a religous symbol. Perhaps it could be conflated in some perverse way to the Virgin Mary.

The Cross was actually rejected by several 3rd century church members due to its pagan origins, but after some centuries the church began using the Tau cross (looks like T) as the symbol of Christ. This is speculated to have been swiped from the Druids, who used the Tau cross to represent God. How like the church to steal pagan beliefs in order to conver the non-believers!! The first crucifixion scenes appeared in the 7th century, and by the time the split between the Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church happened, the Tau cross became the Roman Cross we see today.

Interestingly enough, descriptions of the crucifixion has Christ being hung from a stake, not a cross; this is possible, as the Romans crucified people on roman crosses, tau crosses, and stakes. The very earliest depictions of the crucifixion have Jesus hanging on a stake. Also, Acts 5:30 depicts the crucifixion as “hanging him on a tree,” and 1 Peter 2:24 states “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree.”

Funny, the most accurate symbol for Christians to wear would be a vertical line, not a Roman cross.

    Eric states:

“see, i live my life, im happy. you live yours, doing what makes you happy. but at the end, if you’re right, we both die, we’ve had fun, good stuff. but if i’m right, i live for eternity with the God of the universe, and you loose massively. So why be so passionate about being atheist?”

What you do not understand, Eric, is that we are not really being passionate about being Atheist. Atheists discuss Atheism but we do not push it down people’s throats like Xtians who passionately try to convert every non-Xtian around. We do make fun of the beliefs of Xtians because they are illogical and irrational. They are based on faith which is a belief in something that cannot be proven. Atheists base their non-belief in that which can be proven not in the fact that the existence of God cannot be proven. That seems to be the most difficult thing for Xtians to understand although, to an Atheist, it is most logical and rational. Why would a person not put their belief in that which is proven than in that which is not proven?

With that in mind, Atheists, especially those who are pure Atheists, are very firm in their belief that God does not exist and to say that they will go to hell or suffer immensely for the sin of not believing is just ridiculous and shows your ignorance in regards to Atheism. I would suggest that you acquire several good books regarding what Atheism is all about and actually read them. I doubt that you will do so, though, since many religions have books about Atheism on the forbidden to read list.

You have to ask yourself why those books are on those lists. Is it because religion does not want you to think outside the box or learn something that may contradict their teachings?

In the end, your ‘threat’ that Atheists will suffer for their disbelief falls on deaf ears. In the end, Atheists are not throwing their money at preachers who don’t need that money. We don’t waste our time attending church and doing church activities. So, what we gain in time, we put into reading the truth whereas all Xtians are doing is being brainwashed by their religious leaders to believe in something that does not exist and to throw money into their preachers’ coffers. From my point of view, I gain and you lose.

Okay, now I am a profound atheist, but I am also a very open minded person. There is a difference between being proud of your atheism and completely shitting on some people for believing in something that you don’t and humiliating a person that most Christians hold in a special place in their hearts. This is a terrible product that just perpetuates more intolerance in the world. The people who came up with this should be fucking ashamed of themselves. People like you make atheists out to be insensitive fucks.

    • 2009 June 12

I have never heard an atheist describe themselves as “profound”.
Nor have I ever ran across an atheist that is rather protective of religious artifacts that are based on mythology and uses terms like, “…most Christians hold in a special place in their hearts”
      Very unusual.

      The Crucify Christ kit….
I didn’t create it, but I posted it.

      BTW….I love your sensitive remarks.
