Religious Quotes of the Day: “Atheists are Fools”

2009 July 7

pity-the-fool

I have noticed a trend lately in which Christians, like the Rev. Billy Graham are quoting verses from Psalms that outright calls us atheists “fools”. I’ve read many responses like this at various other atheist blogs. Here are the two verses I’m referring to:

“The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. ’ ” ~Psalm 14:1.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. Corrupt are they, and have done abominable iniquity: there is none that doeth good.
~Psalm 53:1

Many Christians will tell you that the laws in the Old Testament are no longer applicable to them, at least in part…but yet they will readily quote verses from the Old Testament to justify their hatred dislike of atheists.

The following is a direct quote from Jesus Christ…at least according to the book of Matthew:

“But anyone who says, `You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” ~Matt. 5:22

It seems to me that if a Christian calls anyone a fool that they are in need of repentance, but I’m sure they will find a way to justify or sidestep an issue like this. Why would today’s Christians overlook such a direct statement? This guy in this video blatantly uses this word toward atheists.

“I was RIGHT…atheists ARE FOOLS!”

So, the next time a known Christian calls you a fool…quote Matthew 5:22 to them. “But anyone who says, `You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

Putting aside the AVALANCHE of evidence demonstrating the thousands of mistakes, contradictions and downright foolishness of the bible…. How am I supposed to take someone seriously when they use i.e (correctly) and e.g. (incorrectly) in their sentences trying to sound smarter than they actually are? Not to mention those idiotic sideburns and the sleeveless t-shirt? You’re just SO much smarter than the rest of us monkeys, right?! Why, you have it ALL written down for you! PATHETIC.

Atheists are fools because they can’t comprehend the intricacies and joy of the Bible. The Bible inspired Shakespeare.

And Spanish poet Garcilaso de la Vega was inspired by greek-latin mythology. Are we going to Hades for not believing Apollo is the one carrying the sun?

      Wait… I missed this.

The Bible inspired Shakespeare? That’s your rebuttal?

Besides anything else, the man was as randy as a goat!

Have you read Shakespeare? I don’t mean the modern ‘adaptions’ and plays that tone the plays down – I mean the actual, original plays?

What’s fascinating to me, Matt, is this . . .

You’re exactly right. Jesus had a LOT of the same problems with organized religion that you do. He didn’t much care for anyone who put themselves on that pedestal, and particularly those who did so in the name of God.

Much of what’s been practiced in Jesus’ name is the EXACT thing he would have railed against . . . the same way he threw the merchants out of the temple.

And he certainly wouldn’t have called an athiest “a fool.” He wouldn’t have tried to convert you. He wouldn’t have even argued with you. In fact, he probably would pour you a glass of wine, maybe cook for you. He certainly would have valued you as a human being and respected you as such.

While there is certainly some overlap, being a Christian does NOT equate to practicing what Christ taught.

    existence.

And why, if JC was an ACTUAL person was he NOT treated as one for the FIRST THREE HUNDRED YEARS of the Christian Religion? Why was his supposed birth NOT celabrated until the Christians got mad about former slaves were still partying & enjoying

      Neil:

I don’t get so hung up on whether or not Jesus actually existed, where he was born, etc. I’m not a Bible thumper like that.

What I DO believe is that there are certain spiritual teachings that are attributed to Jesus — teachings that are not only extremely practical, they’re consistent with other spiritual traditions from around the world.

So for the sake of this dialogue, to me whether or not Jesus lived is less important than what he “taught.” And in this case, he “taught” to not be judgmental and to be kind, even to people who disagree with you. That’s why — if he lived — he would probably treat you to dinner.

    • 2009 July 8

      Hey Neil,

Don’t mean to get in your face about this – but when an atheist who advocates reason gets their facts wrong, it makes us all look bad.

There was long a tradition in the Church of celebrating the Nativity of Jesus. The holy day for this ritual on the liturgical calendar falls on the 25st of December when converted to the Gregorian calendar.

So the Mass of the Nativity of Christ was one of the twelve Great Feasts celebrated by the Church. However, the Feasts relating to Mary (Theokolos) were the big ones. The nativity of Christ was relatively unimportant compared to the Feasts of the Theokolos.

The summer solstice falls (depending on the year) around the 21st or the 22nd of December on the Gregorian Calendar. So you’re superficially correct – it was only once the Church tried to clamp down on Solstice festivals (and failed) that the Mass of the Nativity of Christ became Christmas, and adopted the Solstice rituals. The concept of a ‘birthday’ is something else that was adopted from pagan rituals as a rough match to the Christian notion of a Nativity Feast.

But when you said that there was no celebration of the birth of Christ before the Christians ‘got mad about former slaves were still partying & enjoying PAGEN Holidays’, you’re very much incorrect.

Sorry I got all lecture-y on you… But aside from being untrue, this kind of thing also reflects badly on the rest of us.

    1. The Bible

    A. Was put together by a bunch of camel jockeys running around the deserts of the Middle East over 2,000 years ago.

    B. It is a collection of original stories, stories taken from other religions of the time as well as previous religions.

    C. It shows NO knowledge of many, many things including the world being an oval, the earth not being the center of the universe or even of the existence Western Hemisphere.

    D. It is full of contradictions and very terrible crimes committed by “god” and
    he/she/it’s followers.

    E. As far as I know, the Bible only says to NOT KILL TWICE

While it’s tells it’s “believers” TO KILL at least TWENTY EIGHT TIMES

    F. There is NOTHING in the bible which is beyond of capability of nearly any person to come up with.

    2. The Christian Bible inspired, and/or inspires:

    A. The Crusades

    B. The Inquisitions,

    C. Witch Trials

    D. MANY, MANY Wars

    E. DISCRIMINATION

    F. BIGOTRY

    G. HATE

    H. IGNORANCE

And among others, HITLER, Neo Nazis and the KKK!

Anyone who is so uninformed, illogical and Irrational as to believe what the Bible says is a Programmed Religious Robot!

And who has absolutely no clue they ever were “programmed” much less they still are.

    3. “GOD”

    A. The Christian “god” is ONLY ONE of the more than TWENTY FIVE THOUSAND gods humans have invented so far.

    B. There is NO more proof the Christian god is any more real than are any of the other gods

    C. NO god has ANY PROOF of existence

    D. IF the god of the Christians exists and if such a god is truly ALL Powerful & ALL
Knowing, he/she/it is the epitome of incompetence!

I would not even wist to be acquainted with anyone as screwed up as the god of the Christians much less would i worship such a total loser!

The TRUTH IS, ALL gods ONLY exist in the minds of those who believe they exist. NO god exists in the real world!

    NO GOD does ANYTHNKMG

And NO, I do NOT have to PROVE that NO gods exist as this is not the way it works. In the Court of Law, in the Labs of Science and in the realm of common sense it is NOT incumbent on those who say something is NOT TRUE to prove it is not true.

Rather IT IS the responsibility of those who say a crime has been committed, or a scientific breakthrough made or there IS a god, TO PROVE IT!

    Period!

    End Of Story!

Next, to the obviously uninformed person who said I had my facts wrong about why the Christians STOLE the Winter Solstice to claim it for the celebration of the birth of the non-existent JC.

You REALLY NEED TO DO SOME IN DEPTH RESEARCH as it is YOU who does not have your facts straight.

(F.Y.I. Odds of finding me wrong on ANY subject I care to comment on are so close to ZERO, they may as well be zero.)

Can someone explain how this is anything but an elitist statement meant to exclude rather than include people in God’s plan of salvation? He’s not calling people fools but he sure is treating them like fools!
    —————

“When [Jesus] was alone, the Twelve and the others around him asked him about the parables. He told them, ‘The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you. But to those on the outside everything is said in parables so that, “they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!”‘”
    [Mark 4:10-12]

    • 2009 July 9

      Um, Mark . . .

With all due respect, you took that particular passage out of context.

Immediately preceding that passage is the “Parable of the Sower,” in which Jesus draws parallels between the Kingdom of God and a farmer sowing seeds. If interested, read the whole thing here:

      http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Mark%204:%201-20;&version=31;

Right before the passage you quote, Jesus says: “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Right AFTER the passage you quote, Jesus lays out explicitly for the disciples — pretty much line for line — the precise spiritual principle he was teaching.

As to why that’s not elitist, well, basically Jesus is saying that in order to apply his teachings, one must first be receptive to them. It is an acknowledgment of free will, not a belittling of people as “fools.”

Finally, if you step outside of whether Jesus or God exists or not, there are sound and extremely practical lessons here, one that anybody can use, regardless of their religious beliefs (or lack thereof):

Principle: One should be mindful of what seeds (thoughts) he is sowing into the ground (mind).
Applied: You can’t sow the seeds of discord in your own mind and be surprised when disharmony sprouts in your experience.

Principle: One should also be mindful of whether the ground (the mind) is fertile for desired seeds (thoughts).
Applied: The ground on “Proud Athiests” is not very fertile for ideas about God. Then again, on my very first post here, I explicitly said I wasn’t trying to convert anyone anyway, so I never had any expectation that anyone here would change their way of thinking based on what I write. I never expected these seeds to grow.

That said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

My favorite response to the “Fool has said” quote is “If even a fool can work it out, what’s your excuse”. On a more serious note, the statement is not only demonstrably untrue but in fact the opposite of true. The more intelligent and well educated a person is the less likely they are to believe in God and some of mankind’s greatest benefactors have been atheists.

On the subject of name calling, here is Ruth Hermence Green quoting Jesus, admittedly out of context but referring to the original text won’t save him I’m afraid:

“Ye fools and blind! Serpents! Dogs, whited sepulchres, enemies. Faithless generation! Adulterous generation! Satan! Hypocrites, ye who work iniquity. Generation of vipers! Perverse generation! Thou blind Pharisee! Wicked and evil generation!”

All you had to do to get slated in this way was to disagree with him or fail to grasp the meaning of some of his enigmatic and cryptic teachings.

C.C.W. I’d bet that I understand the Bible better than you do, I have actually read it all the way through from “In the beginning” to “All God’s children Amen” and studied it in considerable detail.

    • 2009 July 9

Yeah, people often miss that Jesus didn’t mind getting the face of the power structure . . . that’s what got him killed (assuming you believe he existed at all).

And a minor correction: Jesus didn’t much rip people for not comprehending what he said. Scathing remarks like these were reserved for those who were in positions of power (and supposed spiritual wisdom) who talked a good game but weren’t practicing what they preached . . . and weren’t helping the poor and downtrodden. Jesus had a REAL issue with them.

On that principle, it’d be real interesting to see how he’d handle some of these megachurch preachers . . . .

    DUH!

Oh Gee Wiz his name was “Che!” It is illogical to get all excited over a typo when it is abundantly clear to whom I was referrng.

    F.Y.I.

    1. The PRIMARY purpose of language is to communicate

    2. It IS very possible to use PERFECT grammer and PERFECT spelling and still NOT communicate the desired message. (As amply demonstrated in many documents, assembly instructions and in other such things.)

So all of this “Perfectness” FAILED the PRIMARY purpose of language.

The bottom line is: IF the desired message was sucessfully communicated, such things such as
mispelling and grammer are not germaine. They are of no importance.

(And the only ones who worry about such things are some of the anal retentive nit pickers who infest our world.)

    B. They LIE about the Founding of the United States and the religious beliefs of Our Founding Fathers

    C. And they certainly LIE about Atheists

Hitler was a Christian, not an Atheist as the Christians would like everyone to believe.

    ———

    2. Hitler was helped into power by the Catholic newspapers, the Catholic Clergy and the Catholic Church. And while Hitler was in power he was supported by ALL of them as well.

    3. Nearly all of those in German & Italian military were Lutherans or Catholics. (And this certainly includes the Death Camp guards.)

    4. German soldiers had “God Is With Us ” on their belt buckles.

    5. Christian religious instruction in schools was MANDATORY!

    6. Gun owners, Atheists and doctors who performed Abortions (as well as others) were included along with the Jews in the Concentration/Death Camps.

    7. Cathodic puppets MURDERED from ten’s, to hundreds of thousands of Greek Orthodox who would NOT convert to Catholicism.

(This is why the Serbs were killing Catholics along with Moslems a few years ago.)

    8. After the defeat of Germany, Catholic lay people & the Church were instrumental in either hiding Nazi’s in Germany as well as getting Nazis out of Germany and transported to other countries

    9. If the Catholic Church did not support Hitler, WHY has Hitler NEVER been ex-communicated?

So while Hitler MAY not have privately been a Catholic, his PUBLIC comments and HIS ACTIONS PROVE he may as well been one.

Nor were his words and actions those of an Atheist. I know of no Atheists who would put other Atheists, only because they were Atheists, and doctors who preformed abortions, in Death Camps

    A. Why was there not the same big thing made out of celebrating his supposed birthday for over 300 years as there was later?

    B. Since Winter Solstice was months away from the date of JC supposed birth, why did the Christians steal Winter Solstice from the Pagans? Whey did they not pick the date they thought was closer to being the right one.

III. As far as Winter Solstice and Christmas

      That’s as may be.

It is still incorrect to state that Christians did not celebrate the birth of Christ before they adopted the Solstice festival. The Feast of the Nativity of Christ is older than the Christian adaptation of the Solstice into Christmas.

Once again Neil, I do respect and appreciate your efforts to clarify your position. Such efforts are important to ensure we don’t decline into the same narrow-minded out-group prejudice that we revile so deeply when performed by the religiously minded.

I do apologize for my misreading. I interpreted this:

Where I said: “there was no celebration of the birth of Christ before the Christians ‘got mad about former slaves were still partying & enjoying PAGAN Holidays.”

I SHOULD have said: “I am not aware of any celebrations of the birth of Christ before the Christians ‘got mad about former slaves were still partying & enjoying PAGAN Holidays so they took over the Pagans celebration of Winter Solstice”

… to mean you were amending the adoption of the Solstice celebrations – not that you were acknowledging that your position that ‘there was no celebration of the birth of Christ’ before this adoption took place.

I acknowledge this was a misreading on my part, and I accept your correction.

If these verses don’t describe the character and life testimony of an Atheist I don’t know what does:

“Arise, O God, contend for Your own cause; Remember how the foolish man reproaches You all the day long.”

“Do not forget the voice of Your adversaries, the roar of those who rise up against You goes up continually.”

I submit, the only thing which surpasses the Infinite Ignorance of those who think Atheists are fools for being Atheists is their Astronomical Arrogance they have the slightest clue.

If those who say Atheists are fools want to see a real fool, all they have to do is look in a mirror!

The facts prove Atheists are the leaders or among the leaders in ever field. IF Atheists are fools, why are three of the richest people in the world Atheists? (Gates, Buffet and Branson.)

IF Atheists are fools, why are all three of

IF Atheists are fools, I would love to be a fool like Tom Edison, Mark Twain and Walt Disney. OR like Jack Nichelson.

The Bible calls people fools. According to Christians the Bible was written by men, influenced by God. God is not bound by the same rules he creates for humanity. (Hence “anyone”) So if a Christian were to say an atheist is a fool, they could just be following what the Bible says and repeating it. In most cases, I’ll admit they probably are not, unfortunately. But just because a Christian (or anyone for that matter) calls someone a fool doesn’t mean they’re doing it blatantly.

But yet, the Bible says this in the New Testament and is a direct quote from Christ….

But anyone who says, `You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.”

If they’re not doing it blatantly, how are they doing it?

Seems to me that parroting back ‘the Bible says atheists are fools’ as if that was definitive on the matter may not be blatant – but it does smack of a certain ignorant genius for irony.
